What happens at the first appointment?
The first appointment is scheduled for 1 hr. and 15 min. and is a time for information gathering. A nutrition history and assessment are made, including details about typical dietary intake, discussion of previous successes and failures at behavior change, lifestyle characteristics, and accompanying medical conditions and medications. Based upon the information collected, decisions about the first course of action will be made and initiated.
What will my treatment be like?
There are never two cases that are alike. Each person is viewed as an individual who comes with a unique set of experiences, beliefs, and feelings about food and body weight. The client's insights are important, as s/he is viewed as a part of the treatment team. New clients are usually seen weekly or every other week; more established clients may be seen less frequently.
Will insurance cover medical nutrition therapy?
Insurance may or may not cover your expenses. That can be determined by calling member services
(the 800 number on your insurance card) or checking on-line for the listing of benefits for your particular policy. Ann Chicchi, M.S., R.D., is currently a provider for Cigna, Horizon, and Aetna.
